This section looks at equipment and knowledge useful to off grid life.
If its posted here it’s real and it’s hopefully useful. That’s my promise to my readers.
If you make, sell, research anything that might be of interest to my readers, send me a link in the comments area. I’ll have a look and it doesn’t cost you anything. Even better, send me your product to test … far superior to a mere PR release. Really. And yes. I will return test equipment. Or. If you donate the equipment to the site, we will use it for free giveaways. Remember, our tests are sometimes designed by engineers.
This is my attempt to wipe some of the BS off the web. Can one man stand against an army of PR hacks. Stay tuned.

Cell log confabulation

I remember research right?

I’ve done a lot of research on this lithium topic. A lot. And after awhile, well, some of it starts to blur together.

Pretty much as expected. The battery is at 3.83. Now with the cell log we can see thousandth of a volt variations in cells.

I saw a guy putting a cell log 8 into his Chevy Volt battery plug and getting live results from his battery. Voltage checks down to the .00X of a volt. How cool is that?

Battery charge/discharge testing

Will flames erupt?

Testing of the charge / discharge performance begins.

Ammeter install complete. Time to monitor some discharge loads. Movie night it is.
Ammeter install complete. Time to monitor some discharge loads. Movie night it is. Note that the idle current of 11.9 w is a combined inverter and TV “off” load. The inverter is measuring at over 10 w idle.
  • Added: Victron 48-1200 inverter. Would have preferred a slightly larger/parallel design. But this will suit for a year or two.
  • Cheap chinese ammeter/voltmeter.
  • Hooked up the TV for a load. And watched a movie. Perfect testing conditions.

Lithium: Tear it down, bolt it back

Batteries get locked up

In this installment of the lithium build I will install threaded rod. Use the sawzall. Get a little, er, nutty. All to bolt the lithium batteries back together.

Fancy high tech threaded rod assembly routine.

What to do? When you take the packs apart they expand. The top cap holds the top of the battery together, but the bottom spreads.

New girlfriend? Meet the indoor loo

More updates on the chalet trail

The chalet is my winter bedroom. Actually, since the demise of the tent. It’s my year round bedroom. I love it.

Now its also 200 feet from my washroom. So last year I cheerfully hiked off through blizzard and snow. It was no problem. In fact. I love it. But. I am a guy. I am regular.

So this year I added a new feature to my off grid camp. It’s a girlfriend. Hey guys, guess what. The girlfriend doesn’t think hiking to the washroom in the middle of the night during a blizzard is romantic. Or fun. Or something she is prepared to do.

So how do I keep my friend happy?
