Living off grid is partially about building. You need a dry and warm place to sleep. A washroom. A kitchen. And I like to do a bit of gardening. These posts are about real solutions to off grid life. I’ve been off grid for four years now, so something’s working (mostly it’s me). I hope these posts help you on your off grid journey. Peace and love.

Lithium: 1st year report

First year with lithium and the bird is still on the wire

Cell balance remains perfect. The no BMS route remains a great solution. I give thanks to the many other lithium adopters for their words of wisdom.
Well, I’m jumping the gun on my one year lithium report,
but I have to say everything has gone very well
  • no cell drift. None. Zip. Zero.
  • efficiency far surpassing expectations
  • no maintenance other than monitoring
  • = happy Creek

It was a lot of research and study getting the solution worked out. However, the work has paid off. Thanks to all those on the web and elsewhere who helped me with this. A couple of forums; ecorenovator and endless-sphere in particular. Peace and happiness to all.

If anyone tells you to buy lead acid as a battery solution for off grid living. Run, don’t walk, away. Lithium rules!

Fun with lithium

New lawn mower, new inverter, fun with lithium!

My new inverter is a hard wire 3000w. With .3a at 48v tare (or idle load) and a nifty new display screen. I hope this will keep me going for a few years.

Just received my new inverter. A CNBOU 3000. Look, it has a new display showing the voltage and the amps out. I haven’t got a fully charged battery to run the burn in and test the various idle draw claims. But looks good with the nifty display, no?

Cell log confabulation

I remember research right?

I’ve done a lot of research on this lithium topic. A lot. And after awhile, well, some of it starts to blur together.

Pretty much as expected. The battery is at 3.83. Now with the cell log we can see thousandth of a volt variations in cells.

I saw a guy putting a cell log 8 into his Chevy Volt battery plug and getting live results from his battery. Voltage checks down to the .00X of a volt. How cool is that?

Canada Day Celebrations

Canada Day is officially Christmas Day for me

Woke up at 5. Yup. 5 hrs of sleep and I’m getting dressed and running out through the cold morning dew to the solar shed. Time to check the first night of lithium battery goodness.

47.6. That’s the voltage of my battery pack after running over night.

A picture of concentration as I begin wiring up the batteries.

You would think I got enough of all this last night. But nope.
