Da boids

Did a quick drawing of a bobolink. Thought, wonder what he’d look like if I could see ultraviolet?

A rather fanciful rendition of a bobolink. The head is yellow and blue. Not as seen!

And did I see a redheaded woodpecker.  I believe so.

I’ve had this woodpecker coming and announcing itself by rapping on a wood board up by the flower bed. I’ve looked at it a number of times and thought. Gee its tall and thin for a hairy woodpecker. But way too small for a flicker. And certainly too small for a pileated.

It’s been really really really hard to see. It’s exceptionally shy.

So I’ve been keeping the binoculars by the door and when I hear the rapping I peek around the corner of the studio. The little rascal still hides the minute it catches sight of my movement.

Today I got a glimpse of him. Pretty red head. Red neck. But a glimpse is just a glimpse. And perception is shaded by expectation and desire.

Fingers crossed.
