Night time in the chalet

The night time weird

This is a thing. A weird. The wind blows stiff and the house, the small house, the tiny house with its four windows and the teeny gas heater in the middle of the north wall, creaks. There are noises.  Certainly a groaning is coming from a cabinet not yet mounted on the wall. From somewhere low on the floor a rubbery squeak. The heater, a stylish contraption of blue and grey metal, clangs intermittently as it heats and cools. From outside construction debris crinkles, a leftover tarp I wonder. Other sounds indicate furtive animals passing by, but they stay in one place for long periods of time, so I suspect tree branches or bushes rubbing up against each other. This is what I tell myself.

The hay rack is now the chalet

The chalet

The hay rack has become the “chalet.” A dear friend saw the latest pics and said, “what a lovely chalet.” Chalet, hmmm, I thought to myself, that sounds better than hay rack.

Talking about the “plan”

Okay, I had promised to talk about the plan. Originally I had intended to build a bedroom on wheels. Then I found the tent and enjoyed it so much I kind of forgot about the bedroom. Well, until cold weather set in. You know, sleeping in a tent at 0 degrees celsius is not as much fun as you’d think.

So I took a pen and tablet and began to sketch ideas based on tent designs. Finally I came up with this.

Erase, sketch, modify, erase, sketch ...
Erase, sketch, modify, erase, sketch …

Chalet foray: Staying overnight now

Overnight stays have begun
First night in the chalet. Inflatable mattress and my sleeping bag.
First night in the chalet. Inflatable mattress and my sleeping bag.

I have now spent 3 nights sleeping in the chalet. I’m very pleased to report that night one I went to bed with the interior temp at 21 and woke to 14 (70/60F). -6 (21F) overnight but no wind. This is before closing the gap above the door and foaming the last 2 window frames.

Hay rack sunset

All but wrapped

Fought a mean bone aching cold wind today, but the insulation and roof are all but wrapped.

Need: One piece of ice/water barrier; two straps; two infill pieces of insulation.

Sorry forgot to take a picture. To make up for it, here’s the sunset I watched last night while sitting on the roof in the warm November air.

Sat on the roof and enjoyed a beer in the warm November air.

One of the local tom turkey’s flew up into a tree across the field from me. Sat there for about 15 minutes checking me out. Departed in a leisurely fashion when I started putting away the last of tools.

Big lad. About a 8 or 10″ beard. Needed quite the running start. I saw him take off by running across the field picking up speed. Pretty funny. Such grace.

Don’t forget, Creeky’s ego needs comments. Lemme know what you think.
