The chalet is my winter bedroom. Actually, since the demise of the tent. It’s my year round bedroom. I love it.

Now its also 200 feet from my washroom. So last year I cheerfully hiked off through blizzard and snow. It was no problem. In fact. I love it. But. I am a guy. I am regular.

So this year I added a new feature to my off grid camp. It’s a girlfriend. Hey guys, guess what. The girlfriend doesn’t think hiking to the washroom in the middle of the night during a blizzard is romantic. Or fun. Or something she is prepared to do.

So how do I keep my friend happy?

Well. I’ve been a lazy lazy boy this summer. As always. Living off grid is great. Now here’s Gisele, the french dominatrix cracking her whip. I’m back to work. Sort of.

Shou sugi ban cedar siding

Shou sugi ban tests with 2 updates

Well. In this exciting post I turn perfectly good white cedar boards into crispy Shou sugi ban siding.

Shou sugi ban is the Japanese technique of burning cedar planks to make a long lasting maintenance free siding.

It’s a slow process though. As you can watch in this video.

My camp build started as a dream

The dream was to create a writer’s paradise. I wanted a tiny writer’s cabin with a window that had lots of panes of glass. This window would look out over water. You wouldn’t sit at a table, you would lie in a bed.
